Shooting Star. That is what I'm going to call this quilt. If I ever make another 4 inch sawtooth star again... you get the picture!
Excitement! I finished the quilt top, pieced the back and it is ready to be basted. This quilt is big, seriously big. It is 90 by 94 inches. There is no floor space here big enough to lay it out, without moving furniture.
Basting is harder for me than quilting. How to get 3 large, unwieldy pieces together without creases , folds or puckers. Yikes! I've tried pinning quilts, I've tried basting spray - both horizontal and vertical. Recently I bought a tagging gun, you know, the plastic thread that holds a price tag to a garment. All these things are problems: how to lay out the quilt sandwich, how to join it together, how to deal with my aching back and knees.
This time I have taken it to the longarmer to be basted. Then I'll be able to have some fun quilting this monster ! Perhaps that is my basting answer. What do you do???

Oh my goodness, I love all the stars! It seriously sparkles. And yes, when it's too big for basting, it's too big for quilting, so it goes to the long armer. ;)
ReplyDeleteOn my last quilt (60x80") I used a spray basting tutorial I found at judith-justjude.blogspot.com under the tutorials tab. It worked really well aside from where I overstretched the top smoothing it out. I'll definitely try it again. Next time I'll also try it on a fold out table I have.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Love the colors! It's big, though... if you have to pin-baste it I'd say try to find a quilt shop or a church fellowship hall with 2 folding tables pushed together. It saves your knees and your back!
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely stunningly gorgeous and I love it. Seriously big and seriously beautiful. Congrats on a great top and onto an even better done and finished!!!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I love everything about this quilt!! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat's not to love about this quilt.....just wonderful
ReplyDeleteWonderful!! So beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. I like how you arrived at the name ;0
ReplyDeleteI quilt on my plain old sewing machine and lay everything out on the floor to pin together. If it's a big one (which I'm prone to make) I have to move the love seat to get it all laid out flat. And since I'm an old fogy it's a little rough on the bones and back. But...so is gardening another passion. Life goes on...

What a absolutely stunning quilt! Oh my.... I'm speechless almost. :) LOVE everything about it.
ReplyDeleteWell done! I did this QAL too, I love my finished quilt, mine isn't so big but it still felt huge when quilting it! I went for a circular quilting pattern and it worked great, can't wait to see what you decide on.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt and my gosh are there a lot of stars in this! Basting always seems to be the hardest part for me too. Thanks for sharing.

It looks great! I am STILL going to get around to making one of these myself. I have the fabric. Too many other projects in the way, I guess. Your version is lovely--and worth all those stars I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI have a mid arm quilting frame and machine but right now there is a monster on it and I'm not sure how the second half is going to go. I may have to flip it, something I've never done.
ReplyDeleteThat's beautiful! Is there a pattern, or is it your own creation?
